As you leave through the east opening of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel you will notice a niche where there are three oak and glass boxes. Each contains a cruet of holy oil. This is known as an Ambry. The two oils grouped on the one wall are the oils for the initiation sacraments: Oil of Catechumens, used to anoint people before their baptism, and Chrism Oil, which is used after a person is baptised and for Confirmation. The oil on the left wall is the Oil of the Sick, used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
Years ago, this sacrament was known as "Extreme Unction" and was usually given when a person was close to death. Today this oil is used by priests to anoint people who are seriously ill. This brings great strength and healing to the person.
