TIMES NEWS, JIM THORPE, PA "PENNS PEAK" REVIEW: LINK Live Wire, November Rain kick off Penn's Peak schedule with a bang
Penn's Peak kicked off its 2009 concert schedule Friday with a power-packed pair of tribute bands. Live Wire brought its high voltage AC/DC show to the Peak once again, while November Rain fired away with its Guns N' Roses homage. Ironically, both AC/DC and Guns N'Roses released new albums last year, with AC/DC shooting to the top of the charts with Black Ice, while Axl Rose's latest incarnation of GN'R finally issued the long rumored Chinese Democracy CD. If the success of a tribute band is rated on how much it looks and sounds like the original, then both Live Wire and November Rain got high marks from the crowd of about 1,000 that showed up for a fix of its favorites. This was High Wire's third appearance at The Peak, which clearly energized the band into delivering the rock and roll thunder and lightning of one of Australia's best imports. An AC/DC tribute band is judged on two elements: how closely the lead guitarist can duplicate the antics of Angus Young, and whether the singer has the pipes to match the leather-lunged vocalist Brian Johnson. Live Wire scores big on both counts. Guitarist Mike (the band identifies its members by first name) has Angus' kinetic routine nailed, all the way from the schoolboy uniform, manic duckwalking and hair-raising guitar solos. During "Let There Be Rock", he even left the stage and roamed among the audience, firing off hot riffs all the way. Singer Chris Antos, known as Chris A., is also remarkable. Donning a cap to cover his shaved head, Antos can belt out "Back in Black", "Shoot to Thrill" and other Johnson fare with the best of them. Any AC/DC tribute vocalist must also be prepared to handle the songs of late singer Bon Scott as well. Antos was more than up to the task, hitting the Scott-like inflections of "The Jack", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Whole Lotta Rosie" just as Bon would have done them, featuring a wink and a growl.
At one point, Chris wore a Pittsburgh football jersey with former Steeler Joey Porter's number 55 on it, to a mixed reaction of the crowd. The three remaining members, all with the first name Bill, provided the crackling rhythm putting the stamp on the performance. With a repertoire of hard rocking hits to chose from, ranging from "You Shook Me All Night Long", "Highway to Hell", "Thunderstruck", "TNT" and the cream of the multi-million selling Back In Black album available, Live Wire could have stuck to a standard AC/DC setlist and played it predictable and safe. It didn't, to its credit, opening its show with "Rock N Roll Train" and adding "War Machine" from the new album. Some other surprises: "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be"; the band's rendition of its namesake song, "Live Wire"; the guitar instrumental versions of "Bonnie" and "Fling Thing"; and a fiery encore of "For Those About to Rock, We Salute You", complete with confetti-spewing cannons. While AC/DC is still out on the road, the classic Axl/Slash/Izzy Guns N'Roses line-up hasn't been together for some time, and while the band's heyday lasted a relatively short time, November Rain taps into that era, duplicating the look and sound of the band at its peak. The best part is, GN'R fans don't have to worry about November Rain lead singer Brian Anderson storming off the stage after three songs like the tempermental Axl has done in the past. Wearing a bandana and kilt, Anderson handles Rose's wailing vocals and mannerisms right up there with the real thing. The songlist featured the best of GN'R in all its decadent glory, ranging from the ravaging rampage of "Welcome to the Jungle" and breakneck finish of "Paradise City", to a wicked cover of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and power ballads like "Sweet Child 'O Mine" and, of course, the signature "November Rain". It was a trip down memory lane that reminded everyone about the time when Guns N'Roses ruled the rock'n'roll world.

REVIEW: GILLMANFEST 2007, PUERTO LA CRUZ, ANZOATEGUI, VENEZUELA FEB 17TH, 2007 (APPOREA) GOOD TIMES MAGAZINE ARTICLE: LIVE WIRE IN VENEZUELA, FEB 2007
"Headlining at The Downtown in Farmingdale this month was
Live Wire, an ACDC Tribute Band touring the island bringing the raw power of
ACDC and a taste of the 80's to Long Island Rock-N-Rollers. Tribute bands
sometimes have a difficult time trying to please their audiences since there is
always the comparison to the actual band. When you come across a band like Live
Wire that produces a energetic show that compliments the artist, you really have
to appreciate them.
